Prizes for Brazilian labels jumped from 168 in 2017 to 302 in 2018, 210 for sparkling wines and 92 for wines
2018 started well and ended even better for the Brazilian wine sector. After registering an excellent harvest, with a projection of a range of wines and sparkling wines and performance already confirmed in the 26th National Evaluation of Wines - 2018 Harvest, the Brazilian Association of Oenology (ABE) celebrates the advance of the national wines and sparkling wines in the ranking of international awards with the achievement of 302 medals only this year, a jump of 80% over last year which registered 168 distinctions.
The international recognition comes from 26 contests held in 13 countries (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Spain, France, Greece, Hungary, England, Italy, Mexico and Switzerland). This is the third best performance ever recorded, ranking behind only 2014 with 388 and 2016 with 338 distinctions.
“This recognition is a result of a lot of development and research. We, winemakers, are constantly improving. This work begins in the vineyard and follows all the processes in the winery. We are doing our part and the result is there for the world to see,” highlights the president of ABE, winemaker Edegar Scortegagna. ABE was represented with 21 winemakers.
By 2019, 20 contests are on the official calendar of the entity, where samples should be sent to. This work has been carried out under the coordination of ABE since 1995. Since then, 3,943 prizes have been won.
Still wines had a higher growth
Although almost 70% of the prizes won this year are for sparkling wines, the highest percentage growth is recorded among the still wines, which went from 45 to 92 medals in comparison with last year (105%). Of the total, 55 are red and 37 white. "This shows that Brazil has been recognized not only for the excellence of its sparkling wines, but also for its wines," celebrates Scortegagna.
